Cryptorchidism and Hypospadias in The Netherlands: Are Endocrine Disrupters Involved?

چکیده
Thank you Mr Chairmen for your kind introduction, and good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. I’d like to thank the organisers for inviting me here, and for organising this excellent meeting. It is also a pleasure for me to pay a visit to Japan for the first time. The subject of my presentation is the prevalence of cryptorchidism and hypospadias, and the role of endocrine disrupters. I realise now that the title for this presentation I gave the organisers is a bit too ambitious. I will not give a definite answer to the question: Are endocrine disrupters involved? But I am working on it!

Male reproductive health as a sentinel for environmental endocrine disruption
Effects of endocrine disruptors on experimental animals and wildlife are well established. Antiandrogens and estrogens cause reproductive disorders, such as cryptorchidism, hypospadias, testicular dysgenesis and subfertility. This raises a natural question whether these disorders in humans are also caused by endocrine disrupters and whether they should alert us of harmful exposures. While we st...
متن کاملEpigenetic: a molecular link between testicular cancer and environmental exposures
In the last decades, studies in rodents have highlighted links between in utero and/or neonatal exposures to molecules that alter endocrine functions and the development of genital tract abnormalities, such as cryptorchidism, hypospadias, and impaired spermatogenesis. Most of these molecules, called endocrine disrupters exert estrogenic and/or antiandrogenic activities. These data led to the hy...
متن کاملMaternal and Paternal Risk Factors for Cryptorchidism and Hypospadias: A Case–Control Study in Newborn Boys
Little is known on environmental risk factors for cryptorchidism and hypospadias, which are among the most frequent congenital abnormalities. The aim of our study was to identify risk factors for cryptorchidism and hypospadias, with a focus on potential endocrine disruptors in parental diet and occupation. In a case-control study nested within a cohort of 8,698 male births, we compared 78 crypt...
متن کاملAnogenital Distance and Penile Length in Infants with Hypospadias or Cryptorchidism: Comparison with Normative Data
BACKGROUND Anogenital distance (AGD) in animals is a sensitive biomarker of fetal endocrine disruption and the associated testicular dysgenesis syndrome (TDS). However, AGD in human infants with cryptorchidism and hypospadias, which are potential manifestations of TDS during childhood, is not clearly described. OBJECTIVE Our aim was to compare AGD in boys with cryptorchidism or hypospadias ag...
متن کاملEvaluation of External Genital Anomalies and the Underlying Factors in Male Newborns
Background: External genital anomalies are the most common congenital disorders in male infants with unknown etiology in the majority of cases. According to recent reports, incidence rate of these anomalies is rising in different countries. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of external genital anomalies and possible underlying factors in male newborns. Methods: This cross-sectional st...
